CITY OF OXFORD COLLEGE

Overview

City of Oxford College is the largest further education provider in Oxfordshire and part of the Activate Learning group. The college has a strong focus on employability and enterprise, with a number of programmes focussed on supporting young people to develop workplace skills. The Activate Learning group of colleges currently hold an Ofsted ‘Good’ grade.

Objectives

The Foundation Studies department at City of Oxford College provides a number of opportunities for its learners to develop employability skills. These include work placements with local employers, regular employability sessions and in-house work experience in a thriving college-based convenience shop. This activity was captured in a number of ways, including generic qualifications and paper-based diaries. The department wanted to move to an online platform that would ensure all learner evidence was collated centrally, and distance-travelled could be measured effectively.

Solution

Navigate has been integrated into the provision in the department to support the work of the newly appointed Progress Coaches, whose primary role is to support the tutorial and employability programme.
Navigate is being used to:

  • Assess learners’ employability skills ‘starting point’ at the beginning of the college term
  • Provide personal targets for each learner and activities for them to complete during the twice-weekly tutorial session, with support from a Progress Coach
  • Deliver an innovative solution for capturing employability skills development; for example, through the use of photos and videos directly from iPads
  • Progress Coaches use Navigate resources to support group teaching in employability sessions, thus reducing their lesson planning time
  • Record all work experience, ensuring learners have evidence of their workplace activity
  • Tutors select learner personal targets from the Navigate SMART target bank, which provides additional 1-2-1 tutorial time for pastoral issues
  • Measure learners’ ‘distance-travelled’ at the end of the academic year, providing rich data on individual and group progress

JOBWISE TRAINING

Overview

Jobwise Training is a family-owned and run Training Provider based in Central London, providing apprenticeships, placements and in-house training. The Jobwise training programmes are designed to support 16-19 year-olds looking to gain the vital skills required to secure employment and progress in life. Jobwise holds one of the industry's highest success rates (95%) and currently has an Ofsted ‘Good’ grade.

Objectives

Jobwise Training is fully-focussed on ensuring their learners develop the skills needed to be successful in the workplace. To this end they provide regular weekly employability sessions that include visits from local employers, skills development and team projects. To ensure this activity is properly recorded Jobwise wanted a tool that would measure each learners’ ‘distance-travelled’ and evidence the employability skills they are developing.

Solution

Jobwise Training has utilised the Navigate online platform to ensure all full-time learners can evidence their employability skills development and have a meaningful measure of their ‘distance-travelled’.
Their process for this is:

  • Each learner completes the Navigate employability skills self-assessment during their induction. This provides a baseline profile and allows them to select a meaningful employability skills target
  • Tutors utilise the Navigate online courses and resources during employability sessions to support individual and group development. Learners draw on evidence of their progress using photo, video and other documents. This reduces the time tutors need to spend on lesson planning and ensures that records of student progress are easily accessible
  • At the end of their programme, learners complete the Navigate ‘distance-travelled’ assessment. This provides further evidence of individual and group progress

Moving forward, Jobwise Training plans to expand their use of Navigate to include recording learner placement activity through Navigate, thus ensuring all employability skills activity is easily accessible on a single platform.

It's all positive
