Latest Ofsted FE inspection data - Employability and Work Experience

Date: 29 November 2016

Ofsted has made it clear that FE colleges must ensure their learners develop employability skills. But how is this panning out in real-world inspections?

To find out, we've taken a close look at the 9 Further Education inspection reports published since September, searching for keywords that relate to employability. The results are very interesting, with the table below showing how many times on average each keyword appears in Ofsted reports:

Average no. of appearances for each keyword:

Employer - 9.4

Employment - 9.2

Work Experience - 5.7

Employability - 4.0

Work-related - 2.1

Business - 1.8

Enterprise - 0.4

Entrepreneurship - 0.2

Note: This data is taken from the 9 full FE inspection reports published between 1/9/16 and 29/11/16

Looking in detail at the reports, we have identified that Ofsted is strongly focussing on the following 3 key areas:

  • Employer engagement and involvement
  • Ensuring that all learners receive meaningful work experience, including adequate preparation
  • Providing in-class and extra-curricular opportunities for learners to develop their employability skills
