Latest Ofsted Work-Related Learning data: Further Education

Date: 27 April 2017

Ofsted expects FE colleges to ensure that all Study Programme students participate in high-quality Work-Related Learning. But how is this panning out in real-world inspections?

To find out, we've taken a look at all FE inspection reports that were released last half term, searching for 12 common keywords that relate to Work-Related provision. The results are very interesting, with the info below showing how many times a few of these keywords appear in Ofsted reports:

  • Employer appears on average 16 times in each Ofsted report
  • Employment appears on average 12 times in each Ofsted report
  • Advice/ Guidance appears on average 10 times in each Ofsted report
  • Work Experience appears on average 5.6 times in each Ofsted report

Note: This data is taken from the 21 full FE inspection reports published between 22/2/17 and 21/04/17

Looking in detail at the reports, we would suggest that Ofsted is strongly focussing on the following 4 key areas:

  1. Strong employer links in all areas of the college
  2. The delivery of effective in-class and extra-curricular activity to develop learners' skills for employment
  3. Ensuring that all learners receive high quality advice and guidance to support their progression
  4. Learner participation in meaningful work experience, including adequate preparation and evidence of impact
